The Idea

Malaysia’s Look East Policy was initiated in 1984 and still relevant to the current socio-economic climate in line with the implementation of the New Southern Policy launched by the South Korean government in 2017. The idea of setting up the Malaysia-Korea Technical Institute (MKTI) triggered by discussions with various parties including academicians within AGIKO.

Currently, there is no specific technical institution in Malaysia that embraces the South Korean technology and positive work culture produces skilled and semi-skilled manpower to meet the demands of technology-based industry players.

Recognition

"Nevertheless, the Malaysian government is very positive and optimistic regarding the Look East programmes and has no intention to abolish them. The setting up of the alumni is a good example of maintaining contacts and exchange of ideas."

"In this respect, I am pleased to note that the Malaysian students who graduated from their studies in the Republic of Korea under the Look East Policy have set up an alumni called “Alumni Graduan Institusi Korea (AGIKO)”. This is a good start for them to contribute their ideas and inputs through the exchange of I. C. T. in the process of national development."

Excerpts from the keynote speech by The Most Honourable Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the 4 th Prime Minister of Malaysia at the 20th Anniversary of Look East Policy Grand Dinner held on 28th August 2002 at the Palace of Golden Horses, Kuala Lumpur
